Avarizia
Working on a very tentative scifi/sci-fantasy setting probably for an OSR system (maybe SWN) where the players are seeking their fortunes as members of nomadic Space Venice merchant families.
I’m thinking of a three way split for the classes: Combatants, Facilitators, and Experts. There are force-like psychic powers people can use but rather than being restricted to a specific class they’re something anyone can tap into and all the classes use them in different ways.
Thinking personal combat involves shields and people can dodge bullets so most people carry around melee weapons.
Powered armor is big, both for general combat, space boarding actions and defense, and for surviving on planets with wildly varying conditions and atmosphere. It’s also decorated with tons of personal, rank-denoting, deed commemorating, wealth flaunting, and family-related heraldry and adornment.
For the setting I’m thinking that it’s a few hundred years in the future of a high fantasy world or a Star Wars type deal instead of the future of earth. For the Avarizia setting I’m thinking that it’s a few hundred years in the future of a high fantasy world or a Star Wars type deal instead of the future of our earth. I’m thinking of possibilities like the players discovering earth at various historical periods, maybe even being able to play out First Contact with modern day earth. I’d like to have multiple time period options for the main setting but for the default I’m thinking of going with the aftermath of a huge space empire collapsing.
Combatants include Marine (boarding action specialist), Bodyguard (specialist in defending others), Ranger (responsible for the exploring new planets and regions, has survival skills in addition to combat skills), Cavalier (romantic knight-type with a transforming mount that attaches to their armor), Vanquisher (stealth specialist, “troubleshooter” who roots out trouble in Space Venice society, has a cover identity as another class), Brinker (colonist/mercenary from the space frontier who isn’t originally from space Venice but joined up with them for whatever reason), plus some bonus classes representing other factions (space Venice doesn’t really have a standing army since they’re space nomads, they just have marines, guards for stuff, and rangers)
Facilitator ideas are Merchant (kind of a major one with space Venice’s mercantile focus, also does diplomat stuff), Priestess (social skills and importance plus varying skills depending on the deity/religion you represent), Scion (comes from a rich/important family, can throw wealth and status around but has obligations to them), Officer (one of the officers who runs the ships that everyone lives on, good at giving commands, inspiring people, getting crews to work together, bridge command stuff), Adjudicator (one of Space Venice’s order of judges who resolve disputes), Outsider (someone from outside space Venice who’s working with them, the non-combat version of the Brinker).
Technician ideas are Navigator (psychic abilities, precognition, can read weather/atmospheric conditions and see the future a bit), Medic, Engineer, Planetologist (basically a combination biologist/ecologist/naturalist/archaeologist), Pilot, Machine Shepherd (specializes in working with AIs and drones, has a personal set of drones).
